Princeton Optronics Inc. has introduced a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser-based illuminator, model HPIL-3W808 at 808 nm, which can be used with commercial silicon cameras as well as military night vision goggles.

The illuminator has an output power of 3 W (equal to 2000 lm), measures 2 × 2 × 2 in. and can be used for illumination for distances of up to several hundred meters. It is speckle- and fringe-free and has a beam divergence of 18°. Custom configuration is available for <1° divergence.

It produces a circular beam with random polarization, offers a 2-D matrix of light emitters and features a narrow wavelength spread of <3 nm FWHM. Wavelength drift with temperature is 0.06 nm/°C.

It does not require a cooling fan and can operate at outside temperatures from -20 to 40 °C. The module is suitable for integrating with silicon cameras for low cost night vision applications.

Typical continuous-wave output power is 4 W, typical threshold current is 0.15 A, typical operating current is 0.75 A, typical operating voltage is 10 V, and typical differential resistance is 1.5 Ω. Slope efficiency is 5 W/A, and typical conversion efficiency is 40%.
