WAYNE, N.J., Jan. 12, 2011 — For industrial, scientific, research, military and broadcast applications, Vision Research has launched the Phantom v641, a next-generation 4-megapixel high-speed digital camera. Smaller and lighter weight than its predecessor, the v640, the new camera uses technology that recently won an Emmy Award for its high-definition, ultraslow-motion capabilities.

It has new user-requested features, including dual power inputs for battery backup or hot-swapping batteries when under battery power, two auxiliary power ports that can provide 12-VDC/1.5-A power for accessories (each has an available trigger signal input), and dual cooling fans that ensure temperature stability and high-quality images over a wide range of environmental conditions. The viewfinder port has been moved forward on the camera to make cabling cleaner and less intrusive.

The v641 supports Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and inter-range instrumentation group time coding in and out. A remote port allows users to connect the remote control unit directly to the camera, or they can use the Bluetooth wireless dongle. There are optional on-camera controls to allow users access to common camera operations. The v641 is supplied standard with an internal mechanical shutter for hands-free session references, and proprietary image-based auto-trigger for capturing rare or asynchronous events. Timing resolution of <20 ns makes it suitable for particle image velocimetry applications.

Dual HD-SDI ports provide flexibility for video work flow and broadcast applications. The two ports can be configured as a single dual-link 4:4:4 port, be used separately as identical 4:2:2 ports or be configured to provide a live image on one port, while the second can simultaneously be playing back a recorded clip.

The 4-megapixel 35-mm-format sensor and >6-gigapixel/s throughput yield full-resolution frame rates of 1450 fps and 1920 × 1080 high-definition-resolution frame rates of 2560 fps. Minimum frame rate is 10 fps.

The custom-designed 2560 × 1600-pixel color or monochrome CMOS sensor provides a wide field of view. The camera’s aspect ratio allows users to keep moving targets in-frame longer and to see more of the event being recorded. Shutter speeds down to 1 µs and a global electronic shutter guarantee crisp, sharp images with little or no image blur or motion artifacts.

The v641 includes 8 GB of built-in high-speed dynamic RAM with 16- and 32-GB versions also available. A segmented memory feature allows users to divide images into up to 63 segments, creating multiple back-to-back shots without the need to download data from the camera. Any memory segment can be uploaded to a Phantom CineMag, a nonvolatile hot-swappable memory magazine that comes in 128-, 256- and 512-GB versions. Or, users can record directly to the Phantom CineMag at up to 800 megapixels/s. CineMags can be moved to the CineStation to allow for easy viewing, editing and saving without tying up valuable camera time.
