SEATTLE, Feb. 15, 2011 — A new tool for use by nuclear power utility operators for precisely measuring the internals of a nuclear reactor underwater has been released by Newton Research Labs Inc.

Delivering precise in-vessel measurements, the NM200UW nuclear underwater laser scanner is designed to operate underwater, in-vessel, within either pressurized water or boiling water reactors. The scanner produces a point cloud output so detailed that when used with industry-standard three-dimensional software, a full measurable computer-aided design model can be generated.

Its can provide precise dimensioning of features, cracks and welds.

The capability of the laser scanner is important to nuclear utility operators because they often question the accuracy of as-built reactor blueprints created many years ago, and the only other real-world evaluation available to operators today is via video cameras, which cannot take precise measurements.

The system measures 101 × 117 × 232 mm and weighs 4 k in air and 1 k in water (plus cable weight). The case is made of hard anodized aluminum, and the lenses of strengthened optical glass. It is supplied standard with a 45-m cable, with other lengths available upon request.
