CEP Ultrafast Laser Amplifier

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 15, 2011 — A carrier-envelope phase (CEP)-stabilized, Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier-based laser from Coherent Inc., the Legend Elite Duo, delivers up to 10 W of power and repetition rates up to 10 kHz. It does not require the complexity of cryogenic cooling of the gain medium and, when used as part of an all-Coherent setup, it demonstrates CEP phase stability as good as <200 mrad rms.

One application for CEP laser systems is attosecond physics. Here, a compressed amplifier pulse drives nonlinear optical effects when focused into a gas jet to generate high harmonics and ultimately create a train of attosecond pulses. Because this process is inefficient, with a highly nonlinear dependence on the driving laser intensity, it is important to start with the highest possible input pulse energy.

Besides high power, the higher pulse repetition rate of the laser benefits virtually all CEP applications because it directly translates into faster data acquisition rates and shorter experiment times.
