A professional-grade electron-multiplying CCD (EMCCD) camera for
spectroscopy applications has been unveiled by Princeton Instruments. The ProEM:1600
uses proprietary eXcelon technology to reduce the interference fringes (i.e., etaloning
effect) that have made back-thinned EMCCDs unusable in the near-infrared, and to
increase the sensitivity of the detector in the UV, blue and near-IR spectral regions.
The camera features 16-μm pixels in 1600 x 200 and 1600 x 400 formats. The
high-speed electron-multiplying mode captures fast dynamics, and the traditional
CCD mode delivers ultralow read noise for high-precision photometry. The 6.67-MHz
readout rate and 1.5-μs vertical shift time produce acquisition rates higher
than 3000 spectra per second. Applications include scanning confocal Raman spectroscopy,
hyperspectral imaging and single-molecule spectroscopy.
