LOGAN, Utah, April 15, 2011 — Ophir Photonics has announced the NanoModeScan M2 laser beam propagation analyzer, which enables quantitative measurement and viewing of high-power CO2 laser beams.

The system is easy to set up and align, and is fast: An M2 measurement can be made in as little as 20 s, using either the ISO 11146 or Rayleigh method, according to the company. In addition, the system reports beam waist diameter and location, divergence and Rayleigh range for each axis. The device is suitable for CO2 laser-based materials processing, machining and marking applications where laser performance must be adjusted in real time.

The NanoModeScan's software-controlled variable scan speed allows the measurement of both continuous-wave and kHz-pulsed lasers, covering the entire wavelength range from UV to far-IR. Both 200- and 400-mm lenses are available to generate the proper artificial waist for the laser source under test. The system also includes an entrance iris on the optical axis and a precision alignment stage for horizontal and vertical positioning.
