Identifying and quantifying natural and man-made colored dissolved organic matter components are crucial to understanding water quality, and they require collecting both the fluorescence and absorbance spectra of the sample. The Aqualog instrument from Horiba Scientific’s Molecular and Micro Analysis Div. simultaneously measures the absorbance spectra and fluorescence excitation-emission matrices of colored dissolved organic matter in water 100 times faster than previous fluorescence methods could. The device features a 150-W xenon lamp, a double excitation monochromator for good stray light rejection, a photodiode for absorbance spectra and a thermoelectrically cooled CCD for collection of rapid emission spectra. It comes with software and a full suite of NIST-traceable validation tests.
