GROSS-UMSTADT, Germany, Aug. 17, 2011 — Assembly of optical devices with UV-curable resin is a common procedure. In the data and telecom industries, especially, devices must be aligned precisely, and the subsequent gluing and curing should not affect their positioning.

The NanoGlue systems from nanosystec GmbH are partly or fully automated production stations for demanding alignment and assembly procedures. The linear axis produces 20-nm resolution, and angular rotation resolution is below 0.001°, providing maximum coupling efficiency. Long travel ranges facilitate loading and unloading.

Typical devices to be aligned are planar waveguides (splitters, modulators) with arrays of lenses, fibers, diode lasers or photodetectors.

A machine vision system allows automation of the loading and alignment procedures and supports the automated resin dispensation as well as the shuttle of the UV guides for the curing procedure.

The alignment and gluing stations combine ultraprecise hardware with a powerful software package. Depending upon the device to be worked on, the process time for a full cycle, including loading and unloading, is several minutes. The stations are modular in design, and the specific components – motion system, machine vision system, dispenser, UV lamp and feedback signal instrumentation – are chosen and combined according to the specific application. The same is true for the software. If requirements change, modules can be added and configured as needed.

Rotational alignment is executed either with goniometers and rotation stages or with an integrated rotational platform. The motion stages are mounted onto a vibration-isolated granite structure, rendering them insensitive to external influences.
