NEWARK, Del., Oct. 3, 2011 — B&W Tek Inc. has enhanced its i-Raman high-resolution thermoelectrically cooled Raman spectrometer and has introduced the BWIQ state-of-the-art chemometric software package.

The i-Raman is equipped with proprietary and patented CleanLaze technology for good laser stabilization and a narrow linewidth. Other features include spectral resolution of 3 cm−1, wide Raman shift coverage up to 4000 cm−1, and a 2048-pixel CCD array. With a convenient fiber optic interface, it can collect data to within 65 cm−1 of the Rayleigh line. It provides high resolution combined with field portability, and the company says that its performance is comparable to that of large benchtop Raman systems. Weighing <7 lb, The system offers a small footprint, lightweight design and low power consumption with research-grade Raman capabilities.

The spectrometer now offers an 830-nm excitation wavelength option in addition to the current 785- and 532-nm configurations. Shifting the excitation wavelength into the near-infrared by 45 nm reduces fluorescence effects, enabling analysis of a wider range of biological and chemical materials. All i-Raman systems now also feature deeper thermoelectric cooling, which allows the maximum effective integration to be doubled to 4 min, making the instrument suitable for demanding applications involving low concentrations and weak Raman scatterers.

The company has also released the BWIQ chemometric software package for use with the i-Raman and other high-resolution Raman products. BWIQ is a multivariate-analysis software package that analyzes spectral data to discover internal relationships between spectra and response data and/or spectra and sample classes. It combines traditional chemometric methods such as partial least squares regression and principal component analysis with new methods, such as the proprietary adaptive iteratively reweighted penalized least squares algorithm for automatic baseline correction, and support vector machine algorithms for nonlinear data sets.

The BWIQ package is available as an option with new Raman systems or separately for existing customers.
