Keithley Instruments Inc. has announced a low-cost addition to its Series 2400 SourceMeter instrument family. As with all of the company’s source measurement unit instruments, Model 2401 is optimized for high-precision test applications such as current versus voltage characterization of photovoltaic cells, high-brightness LEDs, semiconductor devices, low-voltage materials as well as resistance measurements. It provides these advanced source and measurement unit capabilities at 20-V and 1-A signal levels.

The stand-alone instrument integrates a highly stable DC power source with a true instrument-grade 5½- or 6½-digit multimeter in a single enclosure.

It can operate as a voltage source, a current source, a voltmeter, an ammeter and an ohmmeter, and it provides four-quadrant bipolar and automatic source/sink operation. Operating in I versus V quadrants 1 or 3, it works as a source, delivering power to a load. In quadrants 2 or 4, it operates as a sink, dissipating power internally from an external source such as a photovoltaic cell or other energy source.

Tightly integrated sourcing and measurement combined with a wide dynamic range makes the instrument well suited for benchtop and system applications with low voltage requirements. Applications include high-brightness LED forward/reverse I-V and LIV (light-current-voltage) testing; solar cell efficiency testing (source and sink current); precision DC load characterization; active/passive component test, voltage/current/resistance measurements; battery operation validation for portable electronic devices, characterizing implantable medical devices; characterizing low-leakage electronic device/circuits (forward/reverse, transistor gain/leakage); and calibrating 3½- to 4½-digit data acquisition boards, meters and digital multimeters.
