Asylum Research’s MFP-3D and Cypher atomic force microscopes (AFMs) require no programming to perform advanced imaging and measurements.

For more advanced, automated and out-of-the-box experiments, the company provides Igor, a user-driven programming language. The new MacroBuilder interface allows users to easily implement Igor customization without writing any code, simply dragging MacroBuilder modules together to form macros that not only automate many measurements and analyses, but that also can be saved for repeated use.

Each module performs a specific operation, such as moving the tip to a position, collecting thermal data or displaying the next saved force plot. Automation can range from simple tasks in which the user wants to make a sequence of measurements, such as take a series of images with different set points or a series of force curves at different positions on a sample, to more sophisticated procedures, where the MacroBuilder software makes intelligent decisions. It can decide to change subsequent measurement routines depending upon the outcome of previous experiments.

Automated data acquisition can improve throughput and increase repeatability by removing arbitrariness from the imaging and measurement process. More than 50 modules are included with the software, and more are being added. MacroBuilder is supplied standard in the company’s software at no additional cost to the user. It is a major advancement for automating AFM experiments. It lets users run experiments unattended, including decision-making by the software based on preset “if-then” instructions.

The MFP-3D offers independent piezo positioning in all three axes, combined with low-noise closed-loop feedback sensor technology. It enables top and bottom sample viewing and integrates easily with most commercially available inverted optical microscopes.

The Cypher AFM provides low-drift closed-loop atomic resolution for accurate images and measurements. It includes Spot-On automated laser and photodetector alignment for easy setup; integrated thermal, acoustic and vibration control; and broad support for all major AFM/scanning probe microscopy modes.
