DLP LightCrafter Platform

DALLAS, Jan. 3, 2012 — Texas Instruments has released the DLP LightCrafter platform, an evaluation module for integrating projected light into industrial, medical, scientific instrumentation and security applications.

The module was created to provide developers with components to use reliable digital light processing (DLP) technology in new ways. It combines proven components with enhanced processing speed and power, housed in a compact form. Developers can create, store and display high-speed pattern sequences through the system’s USB-based application programming interface and easy-to-use graphical user interface.

At the system’s core is the reference design for the company’s 0.3-in. WVGA-resolution DLP chipset, which enables high-speed spatial light modulation. It has two main components: the DLP3000, a microelectromechanical systems device that comprises 415,872 microscopic mirrors, and the DLPC300, a controller that provides a convenient user interface and ensures high-speed operation of the micromirror array. The 0.3-WVGA chipset can display up to 4000 binary patterns/s. The DLP chipset is paired with an RGB LED light engine that produces >20-lm output.

The system also includes the proprietary TMS320DM365 embedded processor, 128 MB of NAND flash memory for pattern storage, and a configurable input/output trigger for integrating cameras, sensors and other peripheral devices. An embedded Linux OS allows for enhanced functionality and a customizable platform.

DLP’s development tools are used to build designs for noncontact 3-D fingerprint scanners and other biometrics products. It enables capture of greater detail in fingerprints, with higher accuracy. The LightCrafter development module can scan prints faster, store data internally versus on a laptop or a separate storage device and, because of its size, enables smaller portable products.
