Imaging Development Systems GmbH has unveiled the uEye CP family of compact USB 3.0 industrial cameras with advanced color processing capabilities. Three sensors are available, ranging from VGA to 5-megapixel.

Measuring 29 × 29 × 29 mm, the cameras feature a housing that, because of its magnesium casing, is lightweight and robust to withstand the rigors of manufacturing settings.

The cameras are some of the first to incorporate the USB 3.0, or “SuperSpeed” USB interface. This technology delivers significant advantages compared with the most common interfaces in machine vision, including a possible tenfold increase in data rate of up to 400 MB/s, compared with USB 2.0’s 40 MB/s and Gigabit Ethernet’s 100 MB/s. The USB 3.0 interface offers easy implementation and operation, especially in multicamera industrial systems. It is backward-compatible, allowing for continued use of existing USB 2.0 systems.

The series is suited for a wide variety of vision applications, including industrial, medical and biometrics. It offers trigger, flash and pulse width modulation as well as two general-purpose input/outputs that can be changed into an RS-232 serial interface so that peripheral devices can be triggered or controlled.

Brightness correction is achieved by a 12-bit look-up table and hardware gamma. The company says that, when compared with standard 8-bit, the 12-bit color depth offers 16 times the level of detail.

A field-programmable gate array performs de-bayering with up to 12 bits per channel and allows the camera to output RGB or YUV data, taking the load off the central processing unit. It also performs color correction, rendering true-to-life color quality.

To simplify deployment of the USB 3.0 uEye CP camera family, the company offers a software package for Microsoft Windows and Linux that includes 32- and 64-bit drivers, demo programs, and source code in C++, C# and VB. Mixed operation of the company’s USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and Gigabit Ethernet cameras is easily achieved.
