The M1 model of the LSM 510 laser scanning microscope from Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH contains a low-noise, red HeNe laser and two confocal recording channels. It is available with laser lines ranging from 351 to 633 nm and two, three or four detection channels. It uses reflectance measurements to record 3-D structures made from a variety of materials. A 4-D scan permits data stacks to be recorded in time, a spline scan allows scanning of any freehand line, and a tile scan produces a mosaiclike low-power image made of up to 15 x 15 single images.
