Embedded OTDR Capability for PON Transceivers

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 29, 2012 — NeoPhotonics Corp. has announced an optical line terminal transceiver with an embedded optical time domain reflectometer for gigabit passive optical networks (PONs) in a small form-factor pluggable (SFP) for use in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks.

The transceiver was designed in collaboration with leading broadband access network equipment manufacturers to offer FTTH operators a way to monitor their fiber infrastructure during network operation. It represents the latest addition to the company’s PON transceiver portfolio.

The optical line terminal transceiver provides an integrated fiber monitoring solution instead of the current stand-alone test and measurement approach.

FTTH is a key wireline broadband access technology, and PON is a widely deployed network architecture. Telecommunications carriers are integrating fault location and management into their operating systems to minimize traffic outages and revenue loss. These practices are already common in high bandwidth links at the core of the network, but with data rates growing in broadband access networks, the need is growing to do the same at the edge of the network. The new transceiver addresses that need because its monitoring functions can be integrated with the network management system, allowing a continuous view of the access fiber infrastructure.
