Jan. 14, 2014 — Point Grey Research Inc. has added Sony’s IMX174 2.3-MP global-shutter CMOS sensor to its Grasshopper3 line of USB3 Vision cameras, suitable for machine vision, industrial and scientific applications.

Featured on the Grasshopper3 GS3-U3-23S6M-C model, the 1/1.2-in. monochrome Exmor sensor provides image resolution of 1920 × 1200 pixels and frame rates up to 162 fps. Features include high-speed triggering and region-of-interest functionality, which allows users to select smaller high-definition 1080p or 720p image sizes that run at faster frame rates.

The device’s analog memory stores and shields the light collected in the photodiode, minimizing fixed-pattern noise and lowering read noise levels to 7 electrons. It offers saturation capacity of 32,000 electrons, dynamic range of 73 dB and peak quantum efficiency of 76 percent at 525 nm.
