Spectra-Physics, a Newport company, has introduced the InSight DS+, an ultrafast laser for multiphoton imaging. It is suitable for in vivo deep-tissue research applications in neuroscience, cell biology and other life sciences.

The tunable system supplies >1.2 W of output power with a >600-nm tuning range and <120-fs pulses. Over a range of 680 to 1300 nm, fully automated, gap-free tuning is delivered from a single beam. A second beam provides simultaneous, dual-wavelength output at 1041 nm for multimodal imaging.

The InSight DS+ offers power levels of >1.2 W at 900 nm, >1.0 W at 1000 nm and >0.7 W at 1200 nm. The narrow pulse widths, peak power levels at IR wavelengths, and integrated dispersion precompensation result in imaging penetration depths beyond 1 mm, as demonstrated in live tissue. Its second, synchronized beam permits techniques such as uncaging, dual-wavelength simultaneous imaging, second- and third-harmonic generation, coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering and stimulated Raman scattering imaging.
