Two 10-Gb/s chip sets for OC-192 and STM-64 applications have been announced by Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. The 16:1 multiplexer (VSC8173) and 1:16 demultiplexer (VSC8174) have a reduced power feature that minimizes heat sink, airflow and power supply requirements for telecommunications, DWDMs, undersea transmissions and test equipment. The VSC8173 features a clock multiplication unit that integrates a high-speed clock output to reclock data at the laser driver. The VSC8174 incorporates clock and data recovery functions, and its 50-mV input sensitivity increases regenerator spacing by improving low-input signal response. Both devices operate at standard SONET line rates of 9.953 and 10.66 Gb/s, allowing the use of forward error correction in the data transmission without the need for changing devices or boards.
