Meller Optics Inc. designed its sapphire lenses for use in harsh environments and in near-IR laser systems such as erbium and holmium medical lasers. They are available in 1/2- to 2-in.-diameter sizes and in planoconvex and planoconcave shapes. Moh 9 surface hardness makes them scratch-resistant and impervious to water, common acids and alkalis. The lenses have antireflection coatings on both sides and provide >98% transmission at 2.94 and 2.1 µm.
