An accessory for fiber optic illuminators, a new collimating lens from StockerYale Inc. offers a source of parallel light suitable for directional backlighting and other applications in machine vision and inspection. The assembly, when used as a backlight, produces a sharply defined silhouette of an object, enabling a machine vision system to use the image for calculating precise, dimensional information. The lens produces a 0.9-in. spot of light, and it has a working distance of 1 to 6 in.
