Its circuitry is designed to prevent catastrophic destruction of the remaining diodes by current surge when one diode in the series shorts, causing a drop in the forward bias voltage of the string. It also prevents intermittent loss of connection between the controller and the laser diodes, caused by a faulty or loose connector.
