AEgIS Cools Positronium with Lasers, Enabling New Antimatter Studies
MEYRIN, Switzerland, Feb. 26, 2024 — Researchers at CERN’s Antimatter Factory working on the Antihydrogen Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy (AEgIS) have cooled positronium with laser light for the first time. According to the researchers, the achievement could...
Material Offers Efficient, Sustainable Emission for OLEDs
BERKELEY, Calif., Feb. 6, 2024 — A new, 3D-printable material that is a highly efficient emitter could lead to cheaper, more sustainable manufacturing processes for OLED devices. The material, called supramolecular ink, demonstrated the ability to convert nearly all absorbed light...
Part by Part: The Anatomy of a Raman Microscope
Feb 1, 2024 — Raman microscopy is a fantastic technique for analyzing the chemical composition of samples. It is a nondestructive technique that mitigates the need for material preparation and the use of stains or dyes. Further, combining Raman spectroscopy with...
Machine Learning Hones Ability to Image Liver Disease
TOKYO, Jan. 29, 2024 — A research team at the Tokyo University of Science (TUS) has combined NIR hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI) and machine learning to assess lipid content in the liver. The technique enables noninvasive diagnosis of steatotic liver disease (SLD),...
Multispectral Terahertz Imaging System Incorporates Neural Network
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 29, 2024 — Researchers at UCLA have developed a focal plane array (FPA) capable of supporting real-time multispectral terahertz (THz) video in 3D. According to the team, led by UCLA professors Mona Jarrahi and Aydogan Ozcan, this is the first time a terahertz...
Headwall Acquires inno-spec GmbH
BOLTON, Mass., Jan. 23, 2024 — Headwall Photonics has acquired inno-spec GmbH, a fellow manufacturer of industrial hyperspectral imaging systems. According to Headwall, the acquisition will lead to the development of more advanced, efficient, and versatile hyperspectral imaging...
Raman Approach Safely Tracks Live-Cell RNA Expression
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 22, 2024 — Single-cell RNA sequencing enables scientists to interrogate cells at extraordinary resolution and scale. However, the sequencing process destroys the cell, making it difficult to use the technique to study ongoing changes in gene expression. Raman...
Oxford Instruments Acquires First Light Imaging
ABINGDON, England, Jan. 16, 2024 — Oxford Instruments has acquired specialist camera provider First Light Imaging. Following the acquisition, the company will become part of Oxford Instruments Andor, complementing the company’s existing scientific camera portfolio and enabling...
