UK University Secures Funding

Two teams at the University of Southampton in the UK have received five-year research awards under the Portfolio Partnership initiative, which also is providing funding to four other UK groups. The Portfolio Partnership in Photonics, valued at $13.5 million, is based within the university's Optoelectronics Research Centre, while the nanophotonics grant of $7.5 million will support investigation in its School of Physics and Astronomy.     nano
    An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
