  • IPG Photonics Names Two Board Members
Apr 2006
Fiber and diode laser maker IPG Photonics Corp. of Oxford, Mass., announced today that Henry E. Gauthier, the former chairman and CEO of laser manufacturer Coherent Inc.; and William S. Hurley, a former senior executive at Applied Science & Technology Inc.; have joined its board of directors. Gauthier joined Coherent in 1973 and a year later became general manager. He was named chief operating officer in 1980 and president, CEO and director in 1983. He retired in 1996 but remained on the board for the next 10 years, until March 2006. Gauthier has been chairman of Reliant Technologies Inc., a maker of aesthetic medical laser systems, since May 2005. Hurley, a certified public accountant, was senior vice president and CFO at Applied Science & Technology, a maker of semiconductor capital equipment, from 1999 until the company was acquired by MKS Instruments in 2001. From 2002 until recently, he was a partner at Tatum LLC, an executive services and consulting firm.

fiber laser
A laser in which the lasing medium is an optical fiber doped with low levels of rare-earth halides to make it capable of amplifying light. Output is tunable over a broad range and can be broadband. Laser diodes can be used for pumping because of the fiber laser's low threshold power, eliminating the need for cooling.
