Apertureless near-field scanning optical microscopy produces high-resolution optical images by irradiating with a laser an atomic force microscope (AFM) probe in proximity to a sample to create a concentrated near-field spot of illumination at the apex of the probe. Standard metallized AFM probes have tip diameters of about 30 nm, so the incident electromagnetic field is concentrated into a spot much smaller than the diffraction limit. Researchers in Germany have exploited this effect in an interferometric method that can identify resonant vibrational modes, providing direct information...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
