Photonics Reduces Switch Size

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, Jan. 3, 2008 -- Photonic crystal technology has been used to reduce the size of an optical switch to only a few wavelengths of light. The technology may eventually be used in small consumer devices that connect homes or offices to communication networks via ultrafast optical fibers for high bandwidth applications.     astronomy
    The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    light
    Electromagnetic radiation detectable by the eye, ranging in wavelength from about 400 to 750 nm. In photonic applications light can be considered to cover the nonvisible portion of the spectrum which includes the ultraviolet and the infrared.
    nano
    An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale.
