Leadis Technology Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif., a developer of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for mobile consumer electronic devices, announced that flat panel display industry veteran I-Wei Wu, PhD, had been elected to its board of directors. Wu, who has 25 years of display experience in both engineering and management, currently serves as an industry consultant for Prudence Capital, a venture capital firm based in Taiwan, and as a visiting professor at the Institute of Technology Management, National Chiao-Tung University. Wu founded flat panel display manufacturer Toppoly Optoelectronics Corp. (now TPO Displays Corp.) in Taiwan in 1999 and served as executive vice president and managing director from 2000 to 2005. He began his career in 1983 at Intel Corp., working on the development of its first successful CMOS product. He then joined Xerox PARC to work on CMOS device physics and processing technology, and in 1987 he led a team to demonstrate the first LTPS (low temperature polysilicon) CMOS devices on large glass substrates. From 1997 to 1999, Wu was in charge of the flat panel display program for the Electronics Research & Service Organization of the Industrial Technology Research Institute in Taiwan. He holds a BS in physics and MS in materials science from National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, and a PhD in materials science from the University of California at Berkeley. In 2002, he received the Industrial Greatest Personal Contribution Award from the Ministry of Economy, Taiwan central government. In 2003, Wu was named a SID Fellow by the Society for Information Display (SID).

GLOSSARY
optoelectronics
A sub-field of photonics that pertains to an electronic device that responds to optical power, emits or modifies optical radiation, or utilizes optical radiation for its internal operation. Any device that functions as an electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical transducer. Electro-optic often is used erroneously as a synonym.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
