  • Coherent Ships 1000th Laser for MPE Imaging

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 21, 2010 — Laser-based products maker Coherent Inc. announced the shipment of its 1000th Chameleon laser utilized for multiphoton excitation (MPE) microscopy.

Key in bioimaging applications, the tunable “one-box” laser provides biologists with widely tunable, push-button femtosecond output with pulse characteristics that can be modified in seconds to meet the needs of diverse experiments.

“These are very exciting times for biology; significant breakthroughs are happening with remarkable frequency, and MPE microscopy has been a key enabling tool in much of this work,” said Mark Sobey, executive vice president and general manager. “This milestone for Chameleon lasers reflects Coherent’s commitment to support biologists with lasers that combine cutting edge performance, turnkey simplicity and high reliability.”

To develop the product, the company said it worked closely with the user community and microscope manufacturers to meet the particular needs of MPE.

An instrument consisting essentially of a tube 160 mm long, with an objective lens at the distant end and an eyepiece at the near end. The objective forms a real aerial image of the object in the focal plane of the eyepiece where it is observed by the eye. The overall magnifying power is equal to the linear magnification of the objective multiplied by the magnifying power of the eyepiece.
