EPIC Commissions Study of Automotive Photonics

The European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC) has hired the market research and consultancy firm Tematys to report the use of photonic technologies in the automotive industry.

The report will survey laser systems used in welding, cutting and marking, machine vision, reflectometry, thermography, profilometry and shearography and information-delivery technologies for screens, displays, GPS and lighting.

The report will segment the applications, analyze the industrial value chains and technology trends and challenges of those applications, and also analyze market data and trends.

Glossary
cutting
The process of forming a lens to a given pattern, or of cutting a piece of glass along the line of scratch.
machine vision
Machine vision, also known as computer vision or computer sight, refers to the technology that enables machines, typically computers, to interpret and understand visual information from the world, much like the human visual system. It involves the development and application of algorithms and systems that allow machines to acquire, process, analyze, and make decisions based on visual data. Key aspects of machine vision include: Image acquisition: Machine vision systems use various...
profilometry
Measurement of surface roughness or quality through the use of a diamond-pointed stylus connected to a coil in an electric field. As the stylus is traced across the surface, a current is created that corresponds to the roughness.
thermography
Thermography is a technique that involves the use of an infrared imaging device, called a thermal camera or infrared camera, to detect and visualize the infrared radiation emitted by objects. This technology allows for the creation of thermographic images, also known as thermograms, where variations in temperature are represented by different colors or shades. The basic principles of thermography are as follows: Infrared radiation emission: All objects with a temperature above absolute zero...
