Celestial AI Raises $100M in Series B

SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 3, 2023 — Celestial AI has raised $100 million in series B funding led by IAG Capital Partners, Koch Disruptive Technologies, and Temasek’s Xora Innovation fund. Celestial AI is a developer of optical interconnect technologies. The company’s Photonic Fabric technology platform delivers optical connectivity performance levels that are reportedly 10 years more advanced than existing technology. Other investors in the round include Samsung Catalyst, Smart Global Holdings, Porsche Automobil Holding SE, The Engine Fund, imec.xpand, M Ventures, and Tyche Partners.

Photonic Fabric is an optical interconnect technology designed to enable disaggregated, exascale compute and memory clusters. It is well suited for applications such as artificial intelligence models that require high levels of memory capacity and bandwidth, in addition to cloud services and data centers. Low-bandwidth, high-latency, and high-power electrical interconnects have served as consequential barriers to growth of profitable AI business models and advancements in AI. According to Celestial AI, the bandwidth delivered by Photonic Fabric is 25× greater and delivers 10× lower latency and power consumption than any optical interconnect alternative, such as co-packaged optics.

Glossary
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
quantum
The term quantum refers to the fundamental unit or discrete amount of a physical quantity involved in interactions at the atomic and subatomic scales. It originates from quantum theory, a branch of physics that emerged in the early 20th century to explain phenomena observed on very small scales, where classical physics fails to provide accurate explanations. In the context of quantum theory, several key concepts are associated with the term quantum: Quantum mechanics: This is the branch of...
artificial intelligence
The ability of a machine to perform certain complex functions normally associated with human intelligence, such as judgment, pattern recognition, understanding, learning, planning, and problem solving.
