Oclaro Targets Cosmetic Market
Oclaro Inc., an optical communications and laser solutions company, announced that its 1470-nm laser diodes, which are selling into the eye-safe laser market, are now being targeted at new high-volume skin-treatment consumer markets.
The 1470-nm single-emitter lasers, which are showcased at the Photonics West show this week, deliver the power, reliability and stable performance necessary in the cosmetic consumer market. According to the company, its manufacturing excellence is bringing this technology down to mainstream price points.
New consumer applications in the cosmetic skin treatment market such as wrinkle reduction are driving increased demand for cost-effective laser diode solutions. Oclaro has leveraged indium phosphide technology developed in the telecom industry into 1470-nm single laser diodes. The company says it can quickly scale to volume to meet the price points required to be successful in the market.
The laser diodes leverage technology that is currently being used by Oclaro in eye-safe applications in the defense, materials processing and medical markets. The devices provide 2-W output power at 1470 nm from a 90-μm stripe and are available on a submount, a C-mount or in a 105-μm fiber-coupled configuration. The fiber-coupled version is built on a platform for single-emitter fiber laser pump modules; tailored configurations with fast- and slow-axis lenses for beam confinement address specific consumer applications. In addition, the laser diodes have demonstrated extreme reliability after being life-tested for more than 5000 hours at 10.5 A without any fails.
