Sapphire Crystallization Order

GT Solar International Inc. of Merrimack, N.H., has received a $33.3 million order from OCI Co. Ltd. of Seoul, South Korea, for sapphire crystallization furnaces. The purchase marks OCI’s entrance into the LED industry and is GT Solar’s first commercial sale of sapphire crystallization furnaces to the Korean LED market. OCI will use the furnaces to produce high-quality sapphire, the fundamental substrate material used to manufacture a range of LED products, including high-brightness LEDs. The order will be included in GT Solar’s backlog for its current fourth quarter, which ends April 2, 2011.

Glossary
sapphire
Sapphire refers to a crystalline form of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) that is used in various optical and photonic applications due to its exceptional optical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Sapphire is transparent over a wide range of wavelengths, from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR), making it suitable for optical components and devices operating in these spectral regions. In photonics, sapphire is utilized in several ways: Optical windows and lenses: Sapphire is used to...
