A high-speed camera system for disk-based digital video recording has been introduced by Photron USA Inc. The FastCam records up to 30 minutes of high-resolution digital images at speeds of up to 2000 fps. A global electronic shutter operates down to 7.8 µs, exposing the 640 x 480 pixels simultaneously. Images are recorded in JPEG format with a compression ratio of 1:10 for minimal distortion. The camera, which has a CMOS sensor, can record one long event or a series of shorter events directly to the hard drive at 500 fps without download delay. The 128-Gb hard drive can be expanded for longer recording times.
