The LSC2500 from Hewlett-Packard Co. is a 2.5-Gb laser module used in fiber optic sensors and in telecommunications, cable television and instrumentation applications. The device uses multiple quantum well technology with its 1550-nm distributed-feedback laser chip. A miniature optical isolator between the chip and the fiber protects the laser from backreflections and guarantees >30 dB isolation over the temperature range from 220 to +65 °C. Other features include spectral width <0.5 nm, sidemode suppression ratio >40 dB and specified output power of +3.8 dBm, all of which exceed SDH STM-16 and Sonet OC-48 standards, according to the company. The LSC2500 comes in a hermetic 14-pin butterfly package.
