Apogee Instruments Inc. has released the Alta U2000, U4000 and U32 high-performance life science cameras for applications including fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, live-cell imaging, and cytology and histology. The cameras offer resolution from 1600 × 1200 to 2048 × 2048, real-time focus with 10-MHz digitization, a USB 2.0 interface, 32 MB of onboard memory and ratio images that are <1 µs apart. Other benefits include 12- and 16-bit digitization, two-stage TE cooling to minimize dark current, and two serial ports to control filter wheels and stages. MicroCCD Windows-based software enables the user to build mosaics from individual images and offers time-lapse imaging, color processing, image measurement and analysis, and line scans and display scaling.

flow cytometry
A method of measuring the characteristics of microscopic particles, usually cells, as they flow in a fluid stream through a beam of light. Particles may be stained with fluorescent dye and the fluorescence detected via laser illumination.
fluorescence microscopy
Observation of samples using excitation produced fluorescence. A sample is placed within the excitation laser and the plane of observation is scanned. Emitted photons from the sample are filtered by a long pass dichroic optic and are detected and recorded for digital image reproduction.
