100° Beam Angle for Both Single-Device and Array Applications
CARROLLTON, Texas, July 20, 2006 -- In response to customer requests for a surface-mount infrared (IR) light source with a wider beam angle, infrared LED maker Optek Technology has expanded its IR SMD product line with the development of an 880 nm wavelength infrared LED that delivers a 100°-inclusive beam angle.

OPTEKirLED.jpgDesignated the OPR2800 series, the high power GaAIAs LEDs are housed in a surface-mount chip carrier package that matches a PLCC-2 footprint, and are ideal for use as single IR LED sources as well as arrays of SMD package IR LEDs.

According to Alan Bennett, Optek vice president of sales and marketing, the construction of the LED package allows the device to be used in a variety of applications. "The SMCC package features a flat lens window, which allows a wide beam angle for the LED," he said. "This package design makes the infrared LED suitable for both single device as well as array applications."

The OPR2800 is also ideal for applications in non-contact position sensing, data detection systems, machine automation and optical encoding, Bennett said.

The OPR2800 IR LED features an 880-nm wavelength with a 100° total beam angle. Forward voltage is 1.5 V maximum (If=50 mA), with continuous forward current of 50 mA; reverse voltage is 30 V, with reverse current of 100 A (Vr=2.0 V). Power dissipation is 130 mW at 25 °C. Operating temperature range for the IR LED is -40 °C to +100 °C. The device is available in both bulk and tape-and-reel packaging and is RoHS compliant.

Typical pricing for the OPR2800 is 90 cents each in quantities of 100,000. Lead time, if stock is not available, is from 4 to 6 weeks. For more information, visit: www.optekinc.com; e-mail: sensors@optekinc.com

GLOSSARY
light
Electromagnetic radiation detectable by the eye, ranging in wavelength from about 400 to 750 nm. In photonic applications light can be considered to cover the nonvisible portion of the spectrum which includes the ultraviolet and the infrared.
