UV Laser SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 24, 2009 – The Genesis 355-150 S laser from Coherent Inc. delivers true continuous-wave ultraviolet solid-state performance, producing more than 150 mW of TEM00 output for flow cytometry and other live-cell biological applications. It is based on proprietary and patented optically pumped semiconductor laser technology, the 355-nm device eliminates the potential high peak power problems arising from older quasi-continuous-wave lasers. With low output noise and a single spatial output mode with M2 <1.2, it is suitable for use in high-throughput applications that require best signal-to-noise ratio data.
The laser’s high power increases the throughput of live cell applications including egg and fertilized-egg sorting, where the peak power of mode-locked lasers poses the risk of mutagenic damage to the DNA in the sorted cells. It also is suitable for other fluorescence-based applications, including confocal microscopy, where its short wavelength and low M2 beam provide optimum excitation of Hoechst and Indo dyes.
The CDRH-compliant laser is available in air- and water-cooled versions, and in OEM or end-user models. Spectral linewidth is <50 GHz full width half maximum, spectral purity is >99%, beam divergence is <1.2 mrad, beam pointing stability is <6 µrad/°C, and beam pointing tolerance is <5 mrad. Operating temperature is from 10 to 40 °C, power consumption is 500 W, and operating voltage is 100 to 240 VAC.
