For High-Throughput Sapphire Scribing
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 12, 2009 – A frequency-tripled, diode-pumped solid-state laser from Coherent Inc. offers economical performance for cost-sensitive micromachining tasks such as scribing sapphire substrates used in the fabrication of GaN LEDs. The Avia 355-5 is a Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser that delivers 5 W of 355-nm output at 50 kHz and that operates at repetition rates from single shot up to 150 kHz. Its combination of high repetition rate and short pulse length of <20 ns enables high-throughput processing with a minimal heat-affected zone.

Coherent-AVIA.jpgThe laser is a cost-effective and compact OEM product that features HGX UV generation and PermAlign solder-bonded optics technology. It offers many of the same features found on more powerful Avia models. Features such as ThermEQ for uniform pulse energy across a burst of pulses, PulseEQ for locked pulse energy across a range of pulse repetition rates and PulseTrack for precise on-the-fly pulse energy control allow the OEM to define and optimize the laser process. The laser also has an automated harmonic crystal shifter to maintain constant output power for >20,000 h and to help reduce the cost of ownership. The Posilock beam position sensor and feedback loop result in high beam position stability over the life of the laser.

The device, measuring only 491 × 216 × 141 mm, has been designed for easy integration with a laser head. It delivers enhanced reliability and ease of maintenance through a highly efficient single-pump diode module that is field replaceable.

TEM00 beam quality is M² <1.3. The system includes an RS-232 interface. Pulse-to-pulse stability is <5% rms up to 60 kHz, average power stability is <2% rms over 8 h, pulse width is <20 ns up to 60 kHz, and beam pointing drift is <15 µrad/°C. Typical power consumption is 400 W, with 800 W maximum. The laser is RoHS-compliant.
