RICHMOND, Calif., Dec. 22, 2009 – DiCon LED, a business division of DiCon Fiberoptics Inc., has announced the release of a tunable benchtop LED microscope illuminator with good programmability, long lifetimes of 50,000 h, typical, and low power consumption. It is an energy-efficient replacement for traditional halogen or xenon illuminators for use in microscopy and machine vision applications.
Harnessing the benefits of LED technology, including low energy expenditure and color changing ability, the high-density LED array’s multichannel capabilities enable instant switching between various colors or wavelength outputs to create contrast or to bring out different features in specimens, such as in photoimaging and wafer inspection. Light-output types include single colors, tunable white with multiple color temperatures ranging from 2500 to 6500 K, and mixed RGB. The mixed RGB or custom selected wavelengths per channel are suitable for fluorescence, eliminating the need for the excitation filters required by traditional illuminators.
The microscope illuminator produces no UV or IR emission and is highly functional. With the ability to adjust preprogrammed color settings and intensity level manually, or to create customized strobe effects, the user has control over the light output. Through proprietary LightControl software, the user can program custom light sequences, or “profiles,” that control color, fade, modulation frequency and duration. The profiles are then accessible manually after being downloaded onto the unit, or they can be externally triggered for synchronization with cameras and other peripheral equipment.
Dynamic strobing and sequencing effects also can be programmed in real time through the USB-HID interface. From constant, single color outputs to special programming effects, the illuminator is a good light source for microscopy applications.
It runs on a 10.8- to 13.2-V supply, with maximum input current of 3.5 A and an operating temperature from 0 to 40 °C.
