VICTOR, N.Y., Aug. 27, 2010 — Developer’s kits for New Scale Technologies Inc.’s miniature M3-F focus module are available for purchase online, shipping from stock.

Each kit includes an M3-F module for precision closed-loop lens motion, along with a USB adapter and New Scale Pathway software for easy evaluation and prototyping.

Easy-to-integrate modules enable precision motorized lens motion in miniature OEM cameras for biometric imaging and security, machine vision and medical diagnostics.

Configured for an I2C (inter-integrated circuit) or serial peripheral interface (SPI), the modules in the developer's kits accommodate M12 or smaller lenses and image sensors measuring up to 17 × 17 × 3 mm.

The M3-F modules are integrated micromechatronics systems incorporating a piezoelectric Squiggle micromotor, a position sensor, a driver and a microprocessor in a 20 × 22 × 16-mm housing. With small size and low power consumption, they are suitable for use with OEM camera systems. Mounted over the sensor on an OEM board camera, they improve image quality and efficiency.

The DK-M3F-1.8-TRK-1.5 module takes a standard M12 × 0.5-mm lens (not included). Smaller lenses measuring M8 × 0.35 with an adapter also are available. Travel range is up to 1.5 mm, speed is >5 mm/s, resolution is 0.5 µm, and linear accuracy is ±30 µm.

Angular alignment (static tip/tilt) is <±1°, angular movement (dynamic tip/tilt) is <±0.5°, input voltage is from 3.1 to 3.6 V, and input power (dependent upon input voltage, speed and load) is <0.47 W full speed, <0.13 W quiescent and <0.05 W in sleep mode.

M3-F production modules are customized to OEM specifications for lens, image sensor, focal length, board camera printed circuit board mounting pattern, and other requirements.
