RUGBY, England, Nov. 29, 2010 — GSI Groups’ JK Lasers Div. has introduced the newly enhanced pulsed Nd:YAG JK604D laser, a staple tool for the percussion drilling and trepanning of a selection of components in the automotive and aerospace industries.

The laser provides peak powers for aerospace drilling applications and is designed to offer maximum pulse energy and an improved beam quality. The beam produces high-quality hole profiles, while the high-intensity laser spots allow for fast drilling and fast removal rates.

A new resonator design provides a much wider operating window than previous drilling lasers in this class, allowing users a more flexible approach to manufacturing parameters and shorter times to optimize a new process.

In addition to the physical advantages, the enhanced JK604D can be integrated with the JK LaserView technology, allowing for tighter process control and complete cycle programming triggered by a single command. Manufacturers can also benefit from reduced costs when using the pulse shaping feature via the proprietary and patented switch-mode power supply.

Applications include fast trepanning of 0.3- to 0.8-mm holes in <1s, deep drilling using a long depth of focus, and shaped-hole and on-the-fly drilling.
