SOUTHAMPTON, England, Jan. 25, 2011 — Fianium UK Ltd. has unveiled three models of white-light supercontinuum lasers. The SC-450-8, SC-450-8-PP and SC-450-8-VE can generate >8 W of total output power and high spectral brightness in a continuous spectrum from 450 nm to >2 µm.

The SC-450-8 is a quasicontinuous system operating at an 800-MHz repetition rate. SC-450-8-PP incorporates an acousto-optic pulse picker to reduce repetition rate in increments (80, 40, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 MHz), allowing optimized fluorescence lifetime measurements and imaging.

SC-450-8-VE is a visibly enhanced version of the 8-W supercontinuum laser optmized for maximum spectral brightness in the visible portion of the spectrum. Delivering >1.5 W in a single-mode beam, its average visible brightness of more than 5 mW per nanometer makes it useful for demanding applications requiring high-power visible light, such as flow cytometry, industrial inspection, fluorescence lifetime imaging and broadband spectroscopy. It is available in fixed- and variable-repetition-rate versions for ultimate flexibility. With the variable-repetition-rate option, the source is suited to both lifetime studies and steady-state measurements.

The SC450-8 and SC450-PP operate in a single spatial mode at all wavelengths and deliver megahertz repetition rates with picosecond pulse widths for applications including fluorescence microscopy, optical coherence tomography and nanophotonics. Their laserlike beam quality enables easy collimation, beam steering and focusing to a diffraction-limited spot. They have a USB interface and integrated air cooling. Power requirements are 100 to 240 V at 50/60 Hz.

The SC450-8-VE is maintenance-free and air-cooled. It delivers average spectral power density of >4 mW per nanometer and includes a USB interface.

All three lasers have an all-fiber design which is robust, modular and upgradable, and uses a stable, industry-ready 19-in. rack-mounted enclosure chassis equally suitable for OEM and laboratory applications. The turnkey systems require no user alignment, maintenance or adjustment, and they are compatible with the full range of the company’s plug-and-play accessories, including the new high-power wavelength selecting AOTF-HP tunable filter module, with standard visible, near-IR and IR crystal options.

continuous spectrum
The radiation spectrum of matter found in condensed states, liquid or solid, that is continuous and not a line spectrum. The details of this spectrum are almost independent of the matter emitting the radiation.
flow cytometry
A method of measuring the characteristics of microscopic particles, usually cells, as they flow in a fluid stream through a beam of light. Particles may be stained with fluorescent dye and the fluorescence detected via laser illumination.
fluorescence microscopy
Observation of samples using excitation produced fluorescence. A sample is placed within the excitation laser and the plane of observation is scanned. Emitted photons from the sample are filtered by a long pass dichroic optic and are detected and recorded for digital image reproduction. 
white light
Light perceived as achromatic, that is, without hue.
