NATICK, Mass., Aug. 23, 2011 — Cognex Corp. has added 3-D vision to its VisionPro software for machine vision applications. VisionPro 3-D delivers accurate, real-time, 3-D position information to automate assembly verification, logistics and robot applications. Based on proprietary PatMax and other alignment technologies, it works with fixed or robot-mounted cameras. The new release is integrated with the existing VisionPro library, providing users with access to a variety of identification and inspection tools. It uses multiple sets of 2-D features found in the company’s alignment tools, including PatMax, PatFlex and other geometric pattern matching tools that tolerate nonuniform lighting and remain reliable even when patterns are partly covered. This ensures accurate part location under challenging conditions. Calibration tools adjust for optical distortion and camera position, and they synchronize cameras with vision-guided robots. The software is designed to work under real-world conditions and continues to perform if some part features are not visible. It compensates if one of the cameras has moved out of alignment, so that production can continue. Stationary and robotic applications include racking/de-racking and de-palletizing, and kitting and assembly verification in automotive and other precision manufacturing industries. A starter kit provides a turnkey training application that is supplied with source code and all the hardware needed to get started quickly, including cameras, a tripod and precision calibration plates.
