OBERSULM, Germany, May 20, 2013 — IDS Imaging Development Systems GmbH’s XS mini camera combines a standard consumer camera with the versatility of an industrial camera to enhance image quality under difficult lighting and ambient conditions.

Housed in robust magnesium, the camera measures 23 × 26.5 × 21.5 mm and weighs 12 g. It can be integrated into any system and is connected using USB 2.0 and a mini-B socket. The power supply is provided by the bus cable.

The frame rate is adjustable (e.g., for long exposures) and, at full resolution of 2592 × 1944 pixels, 15 fps can be captured in jpeg. Binning can be used to achieve rates as high as 30 fps.

The integrated autofocus optical system delivers a crisp image from distances of 10 cm — either automatically or manually using software. The associated API function also enables the current focus position to be read. A digital zoom allows almost continuous enlargement of smaller sections of the image.

Applications include medical technology, microscopy and access control. The camera also can be used for interactive kiosk and embedded systems.
