Updated Multipixel Photon Counter Detectors

HAMAMATSU, Japan, Sept. 3, 2013 — Hamamatsu Photonics’ updated multipixel photon counter (MPPC) detectors now offer greatly reduced dark count, reduced afterpulsing and crosstalk, increased photon-detection efficiency, and improvements in timing resolution and linearity.

The devices use a Geiger-mode pixilated avalanche photodiode structure for ultralow-level light detection. Each pixel contains a quenching circuit so that simultaneous photon events can be counted separately and with a high degree of accuracy. Typical gain values are from 250,000 to several million, and photon-detection efficiency is from 320 to 900 nm. The detectors can be operated at <80 V and are insensitive to magnetic fields.

Applications include positron emission tomography, high-energy physics, DNA sequencing, fluorescence measurement, nuclear medicine, point-of-care systems, drug discovery, medical diagnostic equipment and environmental analysis. A catalog is available detailing the performance improvements to both the bare devices and to the high-performance modules.
