Photonics Detects Elusive Ozone Destroyer
Mar 1, 2004 — A team of researchers from Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., and from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., has employed ultraviolet resonance fluorescence to identify an ozone-destroying molecule in the stratosphere for the first time. The findings will enable atmospheric scientists to better predict variations in the ozone layer and subsequent changes in ultraviolet exposure at the surface. Scientists used an airborne instrument to detect the presence of the chlorine...
Light Pulse Halted
Jan 1, 2004 — Using an effect related to electromagnetically induced transparency, scientists at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., have stopped pulses of light in an atomic medium and released them a few microseconds later. The development opens prospects...
Subwavelength Silica Wires Display <0.1 dB/mm Optical Loss
Jan 1, 2004 — Researchers at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, and Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, have produced subwavelength-diameter silica waveguides that display optical losses of less than 0.1 dB/mm. The...
Federico Capasso Recognized for QC Laser Research
Dec 18, 2003 — CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 18 -- Federico Capasso, a professor of applied physics and a senior research fellow in electrical engineering at Harvard University, has been awarded both the 2004 Arthur L. Schawlow Prize in Laser Science from the American...
Daily News Briefs
Nov 10, 2003 — Harvard University Professor George McClelland Whitesides is a recipient of the 19th annual Kyoto Prize in advanced technology, for pioneering a technique of organic molecular self-assembly and its applications in the field of nanomaterials science....
