European XFEL News
Research Project Will Revamp Fusion Analysis Method
DRESDEN, Germany, March 25, 2024 — A research project undertaken by the Center for Advanced Systems Understanding (CASUS) at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf (HZDR) aims to overhaul an analytical tool used to evaluate laser fusion. The work is being funded by the European Union via the Just Transition Fund and by the Free State of Saxony. Scientists on the “X-ray laser optimization of laser fusion” project (Röntgenlaser-Optimierung der Laserfusion, ROLF), led by Tobias Dornheim of CASUS, are to develop= machine learning...
XFEL Inaugurated in Germany
HAMBURG, Germany, Oct. 4, 2017 — The faster, more powerful European XFEL free-electron laser has been inaugurated, producing ultra-bright, trillion-photon X-ray flashes at a frequency 200× greater than the best preexisting free-electron lasers (FELs). The next-generation...
Custom Superprecise Mirror Arrives at European XFEL
HAMBURG, Germany, May 6, 2016 — X-ray laser research facility European XFEL has received a 95-cm-long mirror reported to be the most precise of its kind ever built. The mirror’s production is the culmination of a lengthy R&D process involving institutes and companies in...
Diamond sharpens x-ray beam razor thin
MENLO PARK, Calif. – A thin sliver of diamond can transform the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) into a precise tool for studying and manipulating matter at the atomic level – and may enable experiments never before possible. In the “self-seeding”...
X-Ray Beam Refined to Scalpel Precision
MENLO PARK, Calif., Aug. 13, 2012 — A thin sliver of diamond has transformed the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) into a precise tool for studying and manipulating matter at the atomic level - and may enable experiments that have never before been possible.
European XFEL Tunnels Completed
HAMBURG, Germany, June 19, 2012 — The European X-ray Free-Electron Laser international research facility has overcome one of its most difficult building phases: completion of a 3.6-mile-long network of tunnels. By 2015, laserlike x-ray flashes that enable new insight into the...
X-ray camera to shoot molecules in 3-D
SWINDON, UK – A £3 million x-ray camera that can take images at a speed equivalent to 4.5 million frames per second could help scientists to better understand the structure of matter. Engineers at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)...
X-ray Camera Can Acquire 3-D Images of Single Molecules
SWINDON, England, Aug. 5, 2011 — Designed to record bursts of images at an unprecedented 4.5 million frames per second, an innovative x-ray camera will help a major new research facility shed light on the most minute structures of matter. Created at the Science and Technology...
Europe signs on to big x-ray facility
HAMBURG, Germany – Europe soon will boast a multimillion-dollar research facility that promises to open up completely new research opportunities for scientists and industrialists alike. The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (European XFEL), which will be located in...
