Hong Kong Polytechnic University News
Tiny Pressure Sensor Measures Minute Changes Within the Body
HONG KONG, Feb. 19, 2021 — Researchers from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University developed a miniaturized, highly sensitive optical fiber sensor that could be used to measure small pressure changes within the body — changes as minute as 2 kilopascals (kPa). The sensor is made from a polymer called Zeonex, and its basis for operation is a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) — periodic microstructures that can be inscribed onto a fiber. The FBG sensor is biocompatible and chemically inert. It is also not
Hong Kong PolyU to Collaborate on Mars Launch with China Academy of Space Technology
HONG KONG, Sept. 24, 2018 — The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) will collaborate with the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) to develop and produce a camera on the spacecraft to Mars scheduled for launch in 2020. The two parties signed the Collaborative Research...
PolyU to Install Fiber Sensing Technology in Singapore Transit System
HONG KONG, Nov. 1, 2016 — Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s (PolyU) proprietary optical fiber sensing technology for railway monitoring has been adopted in Singapore metro lines. Sensors were also installed in in-service trains to monitor the tracks on which the...
Edmund Optics Announces Education Awards
BARRINGTON, N.J., Oct. 15, 2014 — With innovations ranging from fluorescence-guided cancer surgery to water quality assessment, nine graduate and undergraduate optics programs are the recipients of Edmund Optics’ 2014 Education Awards. The company evaluated more than 880...
FBG sensors monitor high-speed rail system
HONG KONG – Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor systems installed along several lengths of China’s fast-expanding high-speed rail system help monitor the safety and structural health of the rails. The FBG sensors, developed at Hong Kong Polytechnic...
PolyU’s FBGs Monitor High-Speed Rail System
HONG KONG, July 12, 2011 — The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is collaborating with Southwest Jiaotong University and Dalian Jiaotung University to study the use of advanced fiber Bragg grating sensor (FBG) systems for monitoring the structural health and safety of...
Linear Optical Amplifier Generates Multiple Wavelengths Simultaneously
Oct 1, 2005 — The previous report describes a technique to finesse mode competition in a homogeneously broadened erbium-fiber laser. Researchers at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Kowloon, China, have taken the opposite approach to obtaining multiple...
