Shifting Modes Enable Free-Space Optical Communication
VIENNA, Nov. 12, 2014 — Twisted beams of light have been used to transmit images through the air over 3 km, demonstrating significant data-carrying capacity of light in free-space communications. A team from the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI), in collaboration with the University of Vienna, performed this feat by adjusting the spatial modulation of a green laser beam. Sixteen laser modes were used to encode real information, including grayscale images of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,
Quantum Imaging Method Doesn’t Need Light to Touch Object
TYROL, Austria, and VIENNA, Aug. 29, 2014 — A new quantum imaging technique can acquire an image of an object without ever detecting the light used to illuminate it. Typically, to obtain an image of an object it must be illuminated with a light beam and a camera used to sense the light that...
Silicon Optical Diode for Quantum Information
COLLEGE PARK, Md., April 2, 2012 — Ring resonators can be used to develop micro-optical diodes to replace or be compatible with their electronic counterparts for quantum information.
Universal digital simulator holds promise for quantum computers
INNSBRUCK, Austria – A new digital approach enables universal quantum simulation in a system of trapped ions that can in principle simulate any physical system efficiently, allowing researchers to explore the dynamics of quantum computers. Previously, quantum...
Universal Digital Quantum Simulation Realized
INNSBRUCK, Austria, Sept. 2, 2011 — Using a digital approach instead of the previous analog approach, physicists have successfully achieved universal quantum simulation in a system of trapped ions that can, in principle, simulate any physical system efficiently. The mathematical...
