Tool Path Optimization Bolsters Precision Machining of Freeforms
TOKYO, Oct. 12, 2022 — Researchers from Keio University developed a tool path generation method for driving an independently controlled fast tool servo (FTS) for freeform surface machining. Without necessity of trial and error, the method enabled rapid manufacturing of high-precision freeform optics for various products, ranging from AR/VR systems to components used in aerospace and biomedical engineering. The method could help eliminate barriers to the use of independently controlled FTS for diamond turning, and
Nanoparticle-Loaded Thermosensitive Microgel Changes Color
May 1, 2006 — A hybrid material whose optical properties change color with temperature may find a place in biomedical applications such as drug delivery. Developed by Haruma Kawaguchi and Daisuke Suzuki of Keio University in Yokohama, Japan, the material...
Spinning Eggs Caught Hopping
May 1, 2006 — Using high-speed imaging and acoustic and electrical observations, scientists at Keio University in Yokohama, Japan, have confirmed that hard-boiled eggs set spinning rapidly on a flat surface on their side will stand up and jump slightly into the...
Self-Assembled Films Display Structural Color
Oct 1, 2005 — Scientists at Keio University in Yokohama, Japan, have developed a colloidal “ink” that becomes iridescent upon drying as a result of diffraction. Such materials that produce colors structurally have a variety of potential applications, including as...
Laser Micromachining Yields Optical Vibration Sensor
Sep 1, 2005 — At Keio University in Yokohama, Japan, and at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., a team of researchers has fabricated an optical vibration sensor by writing a waveguide in glass using femtosecond pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser. The compact...
